Worcester wonkyness

When Mood Music
2013-05-30 16:05:00 OK Good grief Charlie Brown – Carter USM

So last week Elly and I made one of our far-too-rare visits to Worcester. I travelled down on Wednesday22nd. As usual, Lev Davidovitch Bikestein and I went by train to Birmingham, then cycled to Worcester. There was strong, gusty wind, so I didn’t break my 27mph record on the Rubery bypass. But, joy of joys, the roundabout at the junction of the A38 and M42 has traffic lights, so there was little to no danger of ending up on the motorway.

On Friday, Lev and I started out towards Birmingham to meet Elly. The weather was still windy, and a thunderstorm appeared to be brewing, so I considered dropping out at Droitwich or Bromsgrove. As Lev and I approached Longbridge, I realised I was behind schedule and that Lev was going much slower than he should have been. It turned out his rear wheel had been badly buckled by a pothole or expansion-joint dip, and the pannier-rack was off-centre, so there was severe friction between tyre and mudguard for 30° each revolution. So we ingloriously finished the journey by slow commuter-train to New Street.

Lev’s rear wheel has now been trued, and I’ve shifted the mudguard/pannier-rack combination back towards where it should be. I think the wheel won’t take many more truings, so I’ve ordered a replacement for as and when, along with replacements for my bike-shoes. June is going to be expensive!

Oh, and this morning’s shopping included aloe vera and coconut oil – recommended prophylactics/cures for cycle-induced arse-chafe!

Spinning up

After a week’s hiatus, ’twas so good to get back to spinning last night. Andy laid on a storming session, including Hell’s Bells and Shoot to thrill – serious fast-paced ‘uphill’ runs and jumps pulling out more than either Elly or I thought we had. I’d not eaten enough yesterday, and had forgotten my glucose tablets, so I flatlined with about 10 minutes to go – huge thanks to Ismini and Elly for the chocolate and energy gel.

Looking forward to other-bits training tonight, then the Sunday Sundowner, and then two back-to-back sessions on Monday!

Meanwhile here’s some photos…

Deleting my chickens! Update

When Mood Music
2013-05-29 14:10:00 bah! Now Show

Following on from this

I emailed the lecturer as follows:

Dear <lecturer>
I’ve just picked up my feedback form. I’m delighted with most of the marks, but I’m a little concerned to read in the ‘server side’ mark CRU. There is a script for deleting but can’t see a link for it anywhere.

I made a design decision that only administrators can delete accounts. To see the delete function in action – and to see the error-trapping and feedback associated with this process – please

  • either log in as an administrator at website/adminLogin.php (email administrator@twt.com, password password)
  • or register yourself as a new administrator at website/adminRegister.php

This design decision was covered in my report (section 1.2.10 Admin facility, pp4-5). Information on how to register and log in as an administrator was included in the ReadMe submitted with the main work.

I’ve attached my original submission to this email. You will be able to see from the modification date (Thursday, 25 April 2013 13:14) that it has not been changed.

I hope this will show that the delete script was invokable from an appropriate part of the website, and that this topic was suitably documented, and I look forward to your reply.

best regards

Bruce

The lecturer’s reply was, in full,

Hi

It wont make any difference to your overall grade which is a band 5 marks wide.

<lecturer’s initials>

I give up.

Deleting my chickens!

When Mood Music

I’m dramatically pissed off. I’ve just picked up my mark sheet for the web design and development coursework mentioned here and here.

Here’s what the form says. (Italic small font represents handwriting)

HTML/CSS Well designed and implemented. Consistent look and feel across site 25/30
Client side
form validation
AJAX
JSON
No numeric check on phone number
tick
tick
28/30
Server side
PHP/MySQL – CRUD
CRU. There is a script for deleting but can’t see a link to it anywhere. 15/20
HTML Page Validation HTML 5
Some errors on language page
6/100
Report Well written and presented 10/10
Total 84/100

The underlined bit is the source of my anger. There is indeed a link to to the delete script, from the administrators’ section of the website. This was made clear in my report (see the second paragraph on page 5), and the way to access the administrator’s section was made clear given in the ReadMe accompanying my submission.

I’m not upset by the actual mark – my website could have been much better – but I’m enraged by marking that is factually incorrect.

By the way, the grade boundaries mentioned here have not been used. In that scheme, 84% would be a D2, not a D3.

Counting my chickens?

A couple of days ago I received the following email from the Web design and development lecturer:

Dear Student

Your overall mark for the module is D3 – well done.

You can pick up your feedback sheet from the school office.

Leaving aside my annoyance at the lecturer’s inability or refusal to email comments (compare and contrast with other lecturers), I think this means I’ve passed this module.

So with a few caveats

  • final marks have not yet been moderated
  • I’m not sure these grade-boundaries are set in stone
  • where I only know a grade, I assume the actual mark is in the middle of the range
  • I’m not sure these are the current rules

the marks from the taught part of my course are on the distinction track. Here’s my current infographic and here’s more detail on the marks so far. The management of software projects mark is pretty vulnerable to the above caveats: it’s quite possible I’ll end up with a P5 for this  module.

The dissertation, where I need to be my own boss, WILL be the scene of a severe train-wreck.

For a few weeks BTMM hasn’t been working for me, so when I’ve needed to take control of my dad’s mac I’ve needed to take control as a normal VNC client. This involved talking him through finding his mac’s IP address.

Anyway, BTMM now appears to be back with us, so there’s no need to talk-down. In the screenshot, MIA (on the train) is observing/controlling Iggy (in Edinburgh). In turn, Iggy is observing/controlling my dad’s mac (in Worcester).
