- cycling distance: 48.6 miles (Konstanz to Kaiserstuhl)
- cumulative distance: 234.0 miles
Fractal in at least two dimensions
Following a river-route is bound to be fractal in the horizontal plane, but why does it also oscillate unpredictably in the vertical plane?
- cycling distance: 37.6 miles (Bregenz to Meersburg + 0.4 miles to the ferry) + 2.4 miles (Meersburg to Konstanz – 2.9 miles of ferry) = 37.4 miles
- cumulative distance: 185.4 miles
Don’t double-dip the chamois-cream!
For non-cyclist readers, chamois-cream is unguent applied to those parts of cyclists most likely to chafe. It should be obvious why a second scoop, at least with the hand that applied the first scoop, is a serious breach of hygiene and marital etiquette! NB I have not done this!
- distance cycled: 16.8 miles (Maienfeld to Buchs) + 27.1 (Buchs to Hard) + 3.2 miles (Hard to Bregenz – Google Maps estimate) = 47.1 miles
- cumulative distance: 147.8 miles
No-va caned!
Because several times I had to get off and push Lev, and without the various analgesic creams I’d have considered amputating my foot…
- Distance cycled: 48.55 miles (cyclemeter map)
- cumulative distance: 100.69 miles

Grüss-di aus Andermatt! Wir sind in Gasthaus Skiklub, auf Gotthardstrasse. That’s enough German: predictive text is being unhelpful.

- Cycling distance 19.30 miles plus a few bimbles in central Amsterdam
- cumulative distance 30.88 miles
Elly has described a bit of magic that happened today.
‘Hello, world!’ from a cafe overlooking the IJ from the back of Centraal station. First thing to report to Napier friends and colleagues is that I’ve switched off my Napier e-mail. Personal email, text etc are welcome, although immediate response is not guaranteed, sorry.
It’s pleasingly ironic that netween us Lev and I had one good leg and one good pedal, not in contact with each other. Oops! Even more pleasing that the magic is here, despite a couple of shakedown breakages. Long pauses to watch the world and hydrate ourselves.
Squelch!
- Home to Waverley: 1.01 miles
- Newcastle to North Shields: 10.57 miles
- cumulative distance: 11.58 miles
The ever-wonderful Elly has described our trip from home to North Shields so what can I add? Well, I’m amazed I can even think about blogging after 4 hours’ sleep last night, but I’m just so happy to be travelling again with my lovely lady. And of course huge thanks to her and our employers and our various yoga-teachers, spinning instructors, and therapists for all their parts in enabling this trip! Continue reading
Votez mes maillots!
I’ve just received this (bought from Organic Athlete):
But I only intend to take 3 jerseys on the honeymoon. So which of these treasures do I leave at home?
Tweet to @bruceryan_rants to let me know what you think!
On mature(?) reflection, I have to pay tribute to LifesCycle for keeping me fit and sane, and I have to take something slightly rude, and I won’t be able to feed my addiction while we’re away. So, with sadness, the Irn Bru stays in the wardrobe.
